FAMIGLIA PIAGGIO
Erasmo Piaggio, born in 1845, was the grandson of the namesake Piaggio, one of the forefathers of ship-owning in Genoa.
He was one of the first owners to understand the importance of steamers used on transoceanic routes and modernized passengers’ transport, building steamers that made history, like the Umberto I and the Regina Margherita.
In 1885, having sold his ships to Navigazione Generale Italiana, he took the role of CEO and give it a new kick-start. In 1904 he left NGI and founded Lloyd Italiano.
Piaggio diversified his investments: he founded the insurance company Italia, the Bank of Genoa, the Società esercizio bacini, that under his lead built a shipyard in Riva Trigoso.
He also successfully managed the company Navigazione Alta Italia, that since the start of the century had been operating the La Creola line, to trade cotton from the Gulf of Mexico.

REGINA MARGHERITA
The REGINA MARGHERITA was one of the first steamers to make regular passages to South America, carrying thousands of Italians during the years of the big migration flows.
The steamer Regina Margherita, was the admiral of the Piaggio fleet. It was one of the first steamers to be used for a regular line to South America, transporting thousands of Italian during the great migrations. After the earthquake in Messina in 1908 she was used to bring first aid to the area. In 1911 during the war between Italy and Turkey she was confiscated by the Royal Navy and turned into a hospital ship to transport wounded Italians to their country. The ship was given back to the company on February 27, 1912 but a year later she sunk during works in the port of Genoa.
