IGNAZIO MESSINA & C
FAMIGLIA MESSINA
In 1921 Giuseppe Messina, after several professional experiences in shipping, moves to Genoa and entrust his son Ignazio with the management of his company. Ignazio starts a regular line to Northern Africa, using Italian-flagged vessels. The company is awarded with the Postal Pennant for Libia. In 1935 the service is extended to the Red Sea, the Saudi Arabia, Eastern Africa and, in the post-war period despite having lost most of the fleet, towards Tunisia, Algeria, Lebanon, Egypt and Western Africa. In 1956 Ignazio Messina’s sons, Gianfranco, Giorgio and Paolo join the company.
At the end of the 60’s, the traditional shipping activity changes and specializes in regular ro-ro container lines. During the shutdown of the Suez canal the ships from Messina are the only Italian-flagged to guarantee a regular service to Eastern Africa and in 1975 it is one of the company’s vessels to first navigate the canal after its re-opening. Several routes are added to include a line to the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf and later to India, Pakistan and South Africa. At the end of the 80’s the fourth generation starts managing the company with Andrea Gais, Massimo, Ignazio, Stefano and Emanuele Messina, who guarantee a family-run kind of business.
In 1996, after nearly twenty years the company establishes its own terminal in the port of Genoa (on the Nino Ronco and Canepa docks), that will be the fisrt one to obtain a RINA registration for safety and sustainability and a ISPS Safety Code rating.
In 2015 the company concludes a total renewal of its fleet (that started in 2009) adding the eight biggest ro-ro container ships in the world, built by the South Korean yards Daewoo and STX.
