FAMIGLIA RAVANO

In the 20’s Alberto Ravano founds four shipping companies, thanks to his extraordinary knowledge and ability to put together a fleet. His family is one of the most active on the Genoese scene and all their ships had the same, distinctive livery: a black orange-stripped chimney.
Before WW II the company owned 25 ships, but only one survived the conflict.
Ravano is also leading the Italian delegation that negotiate the acquisition of the Liberty class ships for his deep knowledge of the anglo-saxon world and good relationship with US companies, especially with Captain Stefano Saglietto, who later worked as his representative in the Baltimore branch.

CLYDE WATER

The CLYDE WATER was built in the post-war period at the John Brown shipyard in Glasgow.  Launched on June 7, 1951, she was christened together with her future crew.

The Clydewater was the first steamer built in the post-war period for owner Ravano.
It was Francesco Ravano himself to approve the construction, despite the budget – 900,000 pounds – was extremely high. Time proved him right as the rental fees repaid him in two years only.
The launch was an event that involved all the family, with everyone attending.
On June 7, 1951 Maria Luisa Ravano in Sannazzaro Natta was the godmother of the Clydewater. She repeated the usual formula and the blessing to the crew in English too.
She was re-baptized Charitas in 1968.

The Seafox is equipped with masts and loading spars making her autonomous
when the port cranes are not available.
Hold doors and the big openings on deck are innovations that revolutionized
the transport of dry goods.
Licensed in 1929 by Robert e Joseph MacGregor, this new closing steel system spread in the post war period, making the ships safer too.
The owners Ravano and Marsano were the ones who better welcomed the invention.
