CARLO CAMELI

The founder Carlo Cameli, was born in Matelica (Macerata) on May 25, 1873, and as soon as he graduated moved to Genoa. In 1913 he was working as a manager at Transatlantica Italiana and in 1921 he became the company’s CEO. In the second half of the 20’s together with his sons Francesco, Luigi, Filippo and Raffaele he started his own business in the oil tankers sector.

After the war, the company salvaged some sunked ships and benefiting from the Marshal Plan, became one of biggest private shipping brands in Europe. In the 70’s their fleet was made of around 50 modern ships and the Camelis were among the first to launch big tankers flying the Italian flag like the 57,000 dwt Agrigentum in 1958, the 90,000 dwt Carlo Cameli in 1964 and the 250,000 dwt Sant’Ambrogio in 1971. The Carlo Cameli, launched in 1964, at the time was the biggest Italian tanker and one of the biggest in the world. Still, if she is to be compared to today’s tankers she looks medium-sized.

Today tankers are classed according to their size:
the ULCC (Ultra Large Crude Carrier) ships with a loading capacity exceeding 300,000 tons; the VLCC (Very Large Crude Carrier) that is tankers that can load over 200,000 tons of oil.
Another way to class ships is by their name: the SUEZMAX (tankers with a capacity between 125,000 and 200,000 tons that can go through the Suez Canal); the AFRAMAX (Average Freight Rate Assessment, with a capacity between 125,000 and 80,000 tons)and the PANAMAX (ships with a capacity between 50,000 and 90,000 tons and with a max beam of 32,2 metres and thus able to navigate through the Panama Canal).
